CUADRIENAL DE PRAGA - PQ 2023 (8 -18 Xuño 2023)
Entre el 8 y el 18 de junio de 2023 se celebrará la decimoquinta edición de la mayor exposición internacional de teatro y escenografía La Cuadrienal de Praga 2023. (PQ – Prague Quadrennial)
Que tendrá varias actividades complementarias, como PQ Studio, PQ Performance, a Exposición del espacio teatral, PQ Talks y el Premio de la mejor publicación.
El tema de la Cuadrienal de Praga 2023 es RARO; en el sentido de realidades únicas y crudas que crean los artistas. PQ presentará arte que surge de ideas, materiales, enfoques artísticos y prácticas de diseño que se conectan con un nivel humano desde dentro del entorno, con su genius loci y su situación única.
La ubicación principal será el Mercado de Praga, un hito histórico del distrito de Praga 7, Holešovice. Originalmente un matadero, ahora sirve como mercado que comprende más de 40 salas que albergan tiendas, restaurantes, galerías, centro de refugiados o teatros de vanguardia. PQ optó por utilizar su estructura única de salas separadas para albergar allí la Exposición de países y regiones, la Exposición de estudiantes y las Charlas de PQ, así como las numerosas representaciones de PQ Performance.

“La historia de este lugar, un antiguo matadero, es rica y estratificada y visceral.
Comenzó a existir en 1895, debido a las necesidades apremiantes de crear una ubicación centralizada para sacrificar animales y procesar y vender carne.
En su momento fue un proyecto progresivo y ambicioso, una especie de ciudad dentro de la ciudad, un área de casi 11 hectáreas, con infraestructura propia.

Este edificio alberga un teatro experimental y un espacio llamado simplemente Jatka 78 (Matadero 78).

La Escola Superior de Arte Dramática de Galicia va a participar en la Cuadrienal de Praga, la feria más importante del mundo en el ámbito profesional escenográfico.
What's PQ 2023?
Since 1967, the Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space presents the best works in scenography with emphasis on the self-sufficiency of this artistic field. The 15th edition will take place from 8 to 18 June 2023, the main location will be the Prague Market, and numerous parts will also be hosted in the National Gallery and The Academy of Performing Arts. PQ does not operate merely as a festival, gradually it has evolved into a platform, which explores progressive approaches, new media, virtual spaces and interdisciplinary relations. PQ2023 will introduce artworks from dozens of countries from hundreds of artists within the scope of projects curated by an international PQ team and the main competitive exhibitions.
How do we see performance design/scenography?
Performance design/scenography today is often presented through live and immersive experiences, where all senses can be involved and the audience members take on an active role. We see performance design/scenography as an art form that goes beyond the visual, into an experiential and sensorial realm with a focus on interdisciplinary collaboration, giving creative expression to new ideas and experiments. Contemporary performance design/scenography is an art form within parameters of multi-sensory environments – creating worlds of sensations appealing to the imagination, the mind, as well as the sensory organs: the eye, the ear, the nose, the skin. Scenographic environments take on a life that by default eludes the designer’s grasp: no matter how carefully it is planned and executed, it is truly completed by the participants engaging with the designed space. Every creation, then, is impermanent and changeable; it is also visionary and volatile in that it works with, and rests on, many unknowns.
The theme of the 15th edition of PQ in 2023 is RARE; in the sense of unique and raw realities that artists create. PQ 2023 will present art springing out of ideas, materials, artistic approaches, and design practices that connect to the human level from within your environment, with its genius loci and unique situation. In the current state of precarity, uncertainty, and epochal change, we call on performance designers, scenographers, and performance practitioners to use their RARE imagination and creativity to help us envision what the world and theatre could look like in the post-pandemic future.

The Student Exhibition is competitive as well. It traces local pasts, envisions local futures, suggests ways to cope with the significant traits of one’s own cultural background and negotiates how local identities contribute to, enrich and inspire new works of performance design/scenography. The students focus on distinctive experiences in their hoods and motherlands, juicing their cultural knowledge and charms and translating them into visionary works in performance design with special emphasis on modern methods of digitalization and audience engagement.
The Student Exhibition presents creative interventions that take inspiration from local knowledge, local culture and identity – in the belief that local ideas, materials, artistic approaches connected to communities, and genius loci of your place can bring inspiration to new and visionary works of performance design/scenography. With that intention, the participating schools and emerging designers create an exhibition (or an immersive experience space) based on or inspired by, the cultural knowledge of a place. The unique process of transformation of these local sources of imagination into new and RARE works of performance design/scenography will actively contribute to the sharing of stories with others from around the world.
This exhibition is competitive. Student Exhibition shows the work of students, young designers, and young designer’s studios representing their own country or region. This edition of PQ again encourages national/regional centres and curators to widen the search and include not only student designers and educational institutions but also young designers and new emerging design studios (young designers up to 5 years after graduation).
